Korradecker by JakeKalbhenn Korradecker by JakeKalbhenn
Recently I bought the J.C Leyendecker art book. Then shortly after that Bryan Konietzko made a Korra fan art contest post on his tumblr. Since I was so jazzed about the book, and since Korra is set in a world with a 1920's vibe, I thought it would be a fun idea to mix the famous illustrator of that time with the show. When I think of J.C Leyendecker's work, the first thing that comes up is his covers for The Saturday Evening post. So playing off of that just seemed like the obvious choice.

Searching through the Leyendecker book I tried to find my favorite painting of his which I could play around with. I had narrowed it down to this painting which inspired the whole thing. 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqa...

Hopefully hardcore Leyendecker fans aren't too disgruntled about this first attempt at his style HAHAHAH.

Side note. I bought the Legend of Korra art book 2 days ago and it is super awesome. I really wish I could do background painting or colour keys for that show. I don't think I would sleep (⊙ヮ⊙)

Love this art, bought a print earlier this year and I just got it signed by Janet Varney at Anime Evolution. She was so excited to see this piece of art for the first time that she took a picture of it to tweet everyone :) She loved it!

Very interesting merge of the two, i really like it. I feel you were the most succesful was in Korra. I feel Naga and the ice is too stylized.  JC has a strokie kind of style but he did it with more defination. i feel nagas head is too boxy and the ice looks like its unfinished, in my opinion. One of my favorite things of JC was that he merged colors beautifully like in this image 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1i..., the horse is pinkish, green, blue, yellow... and its all smooth and defined beautifully. I feel with naga and your ice its too blue, too flat. also i think if the moon is on that side of the characters, there would be more if a stronger shadow to make the glow intense.

You were not mean at all. I appreciate you pointing out some things about his images to me that I can use in the future.

It's funny you say Korra was more successful because I think I spent half the time on her. I probably got to caught up in strokes when doing Naga first.

That image you linked might have helped me a lot. I shall make sure I take more care in my next images with my warm and cool shifts as well as testing out how bright i can go with the tones.

thanks for your feedback :)

Np, like i said, the concept of your piece did work well and it was really intriging to me.
as for colors, esp when working with polar bears or ice, there are more colors then just blue. this: peterfiore.com/paintings/ameri... (is my teachers work) and his shadows are blue but the snow isnt just white, its very very slightly tinted with red or yellow. ive can be depending on the light, yellow, green, purple or blue. and to accent a certain color, the shadow shouldnt just be a darker shade of that said color but its complmentary color. so if your ice is blue, the shadow should be orange/ orange mixed with blue with maybe a tint of purple. colors in shadows give depth and light to a piece and i feel JC was able to play with colors that had the same color value (brightness) but different temperature color to made his figures come alive.

and as for korra, many times when you just let loose and do it, its the most successful lol

Mmhmm I completely understand what you mean by there being a mix of colours that could go into it. Warm and cool shifts when used properly can really make a painting pop and give it life. To keep this one simple and get it done for the contests deadline I just gave it three colour passes over the grey scale drawing.

You seem to be really into colour relations. ^^ Have you picked up James Gurney's book on colour and light by any chance? It's a really awesome read

ah that book. 1. hes amazing, i have a bunch of his dinotopia books just to keep the covers
2. ive seen the book in stores around before but i never actually bought it
3. a few friends have it and say its the book from god lol
my work doesnt have to great a variety on light and color so my teacher always pushes it onto me. its the thing i try to be the most mindful of when i do  my own work and i look at others work to understand the balance of light. its a theory i get, but one that i dont always remember to put in my work lol.

and yea for a contest, quick is usually the way to go : )

Excellent!

For some reason, it reminds me of the old cartoon, "Belle & Sebastian"...

Kudos!

What a creative idea! I love the style in which you drew Korra and Naga. It give it such a stylistic feel, that it`s almost like it really is a Post that you would see in the show! oUo
